Nurture Library Professionals

Nurturing library professionals is indispensable for the development public libraries. In 1953, Library Association of the Republic of China (Taiwan) was established. In 1954, National Taiwan Library reopened in Taiwan, which became the backdrop for the rise of library professional education. In 1955, National Taiwan Normal University established Library Science program under Department of Adult and Continuing Education. In 1961, National Taiwan University established Department of Library Science. Later on, Shih Hsin School of Journalism (Shih Hsin University), Fu Jen Catholic University, Tamkang University, and Hsuan Chuang University established departments relevant to library science. National Chengchi University, National Chung Hsing University, and Chiao Tung University established master’s programs relevant to library science, while National Taiwan University, National Taiwan Normal Univeristy, and National Chengchi University even established doctoral programs relevant to library science. All of which makes library education become a complete system with undergraduate, master’s and doctoral programs.

The advent of technology age makes Department of Library Science change its name into Department of Library and Information Science in 1990s, and other professional and diverse programs, such as digital library, ancient Chinese book organization, and information and communication, are established in succession.

Other short-term workshops, such as workshops for library staff hosted by Education Office and the Association, and workshops for public library staff, town librarians, and school librarians hosted by public libraries, are organized to improve professional knowledge of librarians and staff along with times.
